Back in the 1970′s, there was plenty of open space as home development in North Georgia was just beginning to boom. Earl McMillen, a land developer, wanted to create a community of homes that had a mountain resort feel but was close to Atlanta for daily commuting.

The result was Loch Highland, know as a “first home community with a second home atmosphere.” It’s close enough to the city, but far from the day-to-day rush of city life. The homes were individually designed, and no two floor plans are alike. Each home feels more like a mountain retreat, some with lake views and many with densely wooded lots on rolling hills.

Loch Highland was bult in three phases beginning in the early 1970′s. The homes originaly were priced from the high $50,000 to the $80,000. Many of the homes were built in the contemporary style which offers a greater sense of space with features such as cathedral ceilings and expansive windows.

In the late 1980′s, the Loch Highland dam was damaged during county road construction and the lake was drained. After much negotiation, the dam was fixed and the lakes refilled, with the cost shared by the county and the homeowners.

Loch Highland has a mandatory homeowners association. The association is responsible for maintaing the unique architectural feeling and natural surrounds that make the area one of the most sought-after locations in North Georgia.
